Another nice rip
Ok, I lied. A post on Saturday this weekend.
Orchestre Mode Succès is a group put together by Baba Ley Assaka and Bopol Mansiamina, both Congo-Kinshasa natives.
Bopol got his start in the late 1960s with Papa Noel in the Orchestre Bamboula. He’s played with many greats over the years, and more recently did some guitar work with Ricardo Lemvo who you might have heard here before.
I’m unsure if he formed the Orchestre Mode Succès when he was still living in Congo or after he had moved to France in the early 80s. I also don’t know anything about Baba Ley Assaka. Can someone fill us in?
Anyway, today’s track comes off the album Innovation Vol. 3, produced by Lokuelo Samba. I love the guitar work on this one and the production is nice, too.
Thanks to Fabian for the music, and to the excellent African Ambiance forum and African Music Profiles sites for background info.

bopo is the arranger of COLOMBIAFRICA ORCHESTRA ¡¡
Thanks for pointing that out about Bopol – I didn’t put two and two together, despite doing a post about the Colombiafrica Orchestra a little while back.
Cheers
Matt
These Innovation lp’s were released in 1981/1982 and probably recorded somewhere in West Africa, Ivory Coast or Togo, but it is also possible they were recorded in Paris.
I know absolutely nothing else about Baba Ley but Bopol has recently arranged the new Zaiko Langa Langa cd Rencontres. I saw Zaiko in Brussels last April and Bopol was there as well in the audience but I didn’t recognise him. Here an interview with him, when you see his picture you see why I didn’t recognise him:

Matt,
Thanks for the Music.
Ronald,
This Bopol withdrawn?
Thanks for the description on the album, Innovation.
Thanks to the music Bopol & Baba Ley, their melodies full of Nostalgia and love, Great albunes.
I remember a friend of Colombia (Sydney Reyes), called me a few hours before writing this. he tell me who wrote (in the Pass)-(En el Pasado) to Bopol Mansiamina from Barranquilla.
After a while Bopol he sent a reply saying if they wanted to manage your music in South America.
My friend (Sydney Reyes) had a lot great emotion, I believe that retains the letter,
Un Abrazo, Lucas Silva
Congratulations on this great work he has done by many years.
I am proud that people like you come out ahead and show our Colombian folklore and now with great legends as Bopol.
Respectfully,

you all do know, don’t you, that “Marie Jeanne” from this album was Bopol’s ultimate best-ever big time hit? and that the Innovation series laid the foundation for his imminent association as one of the Quatre Etoiles? It would not hurt to post “Marie Jeanne” for old times sake, eh? It holds up as one of the all-time great dance grooves.
Matt
I also did post a lot of Bopol’s lp covers here:
