6-1, 6-2, Angola

Matt Yanchyshyn @ 17:34

Roland GarrosHi from Roland Garros. Just saw the lovely Ivanovic get thumped by Henin. As I wait for the photo editors to finish up I thought I’d get a quick post in. (That’s a pic of Roland Garros to the left.)

A while back a Benn loxo reader suggested I have a listen to a 4 CD compilation of Angolan music recorded betweeen 1960 and 1975, Angola – as 100 grandes músicas dos anos 60 e 70.

What a find. Often compilations like this are stuffed with fillers, with maybe two or three gems per disc. However, Angola 100, as it’s known in English, is jam packed with an amazing variety of great songs by musicians, most of whom I’ve never heard of.

The compilation is from the archive of the Portuguese record company, Valentim de Carvalho, who recorded hundreds of tracks by local Angolan musicians from 1960 until independence.

ps- Benn loxo reader, Tony, wrote to say he’s posted a summer African music mix for all to hear.

  1. I’m one of those Luddites who actually likes to hold a CD or LP in my hand rather than download it to my computer. Is there a mail order source for this collection (preferably in the US)?

  2. I had the same question, because I could not find any liner notes. The company told me that’s how they keep the prices down. Still, it is a great series.

  3. John, Ubulujaja,

Unless you speak Portuguese there’s no point: the liner notes are not available in English. Too bad since it’s more of a book than liner notes… could be an interesting read.

    Cheers
    Matt

  4. Thanks for posting the link… I hope everyone enjoys the mix :)

  5. I’m enjoying the brazilian summer mix, Tony.

  6. [...] há sardinhada no C.” (eu que dou tudo por uma boa funjada com jindungo para já não falar “na” música) e as moscas que não me largam e que só vão desaparecer lá para Outubro que ao fundo da rua [...]

  7. There is a similar compilation on the Lusafrica label “Soul of Angola” which is of an absolute beauty and even stronger – it’s one of my all time favourite CD’s, with next to no overlap to the Valentim de Carvalho compilation described above and plenty of the same artists.

There should be even more about somewhere in Portuguese archives – I’m looking for a while already for Lourdes Van Dunem but couldn’t find anything available, although she was a major Angolan star in the 60’s and 70’s

  8. Please, check some angolan standard Mp3 at http://muximangola.blogspot.com/

    Hope you enjoy,
