Rainy Day Luso

Matt Yanchyshyn @ 09:33

Sara TavaresBenn loxo listener and frequent behind the scenes contributor, Henri, introduced me to Sara Tavares the other day. It’s been raining drizzle as only Paris can lately.. plus I have a nagging cold. This calm, Luso-guitar couldn’t have come at a better time.

Sara Tavares is a Portuguese Cape Verdian from Lisbon. She’s been getting a lot of attention lately, including a nomination for the BBC’s 2007 World Music Awards.

Tavares’ voice reminds me of The Sundays’ Harriet Wheeler. Remember them? Their 1992 album, Blind, is a classic of the rainy-day-indie genre.

Today’s track comes off her second album, 2006’s BalancĂȘ. Tavares wrote, arranged and produced the whole thing.

As Henri pointed out, the rest of the album isn’t quite as strong as this track but it’s still worth a listen. In particular, “Lisboa Kuya” has a nice sound but I’ll leave that for you to discover.

  1. Hi Matt!

I suppose you don’t remember me, but it doesn’t
    matter.
I met you through Tristan and I remember having a
lovely brunch at yours..I think it was in August and
then we all tried to make it to the swimmingpool but
just ended sunbathing Place de Vosges…

Anyway, I hope you are doing well! Are u still in
    Paris?

I’ve been going on your site regurlaly and have
enjoyed a lot listening to the different samples of
    music.

I’m just back from Tanzania where I also listened to
some different styles of music. I saw you had a couple
    of albums from Zanzibar…!
I was staying in Mwanza (for work) and people listened
to “Bongo Flava”, a kind of hip hop sang in swahili!

How is it that the first samples you have archived are
    not available to listen to?

I just bought a CD from DABY TOURÉ, from
    Mauritania…. very nice!

    I hope you are well!

    Keep in touch!

    Gayle

  2. very, very, very nice song, indeed…
cheers from an unusually not raining london

  3. excellent song indeed, not that cape verdian though…

Do you know these wonderful artist from the new wave of Cape Verde: Mayra Andrade, Lura? and Tcheka?

Lura is bit too much cesaria evorish for me, but you should ear Tcheka and his incredible guitar sound !!
I was lucky enough to see him last year for the african music festival in Lisbon… wonderful!

Anyway, it is first time I make a comment on your blog (even if not the 1rst time I read you…), just wanted to tell you how astounding and interesting I find it… thanks!
