Awesome.
Every one of the three Golden Afrique compilations is awesome. (Thanks, Network Medien.) All three of today’s tracks are awesome. Friday after work is awesome. This weather, even though it spells doom for my children, is awesome too.
The third in the Golden Afrique series was released last fall. It focuses on mid-20th century music from southern Africa. A lot of my favourites are in there. Sold-out at Stern’s with good reason, it’s just as strong as its predecessors. Thanks to Benn loxo listener, bullet-dodger and shiny brushed aluminum obsessor, Ben, I just got my hands on it.
If you were an early adopter you might have already listened to Tuku on Benn loxo. The Soul Brothers have played here before, too. Dolly Rathebe, however, is a new member of the club. She’s pictured on today’s post.
You can read more about Rathebe’s story here. I love that her name, Dolly, became South African slang for “okay”. Next time someone asks how you’re doing answer back, “I’m dolly.”
Soul Brothers – Bayeza
Oliver Mtukudzi – Rugare Rwamangwana
Dolly Rathebe – Kitty’s Blues

Awesome. I’ve been wanting to hear some tracks from Volume 3, and I will be purchasing this soon now that I’ve heard these tracks.
Volume 1 is also brilliant. I haven’t heard Vol 2 yet.
Thank you for mining Southern Africa music. I am a South African temporarily in the US. Yesterday I just got a compilation of Makeba titled Afrika. Sis Dolly was a great friend of Makeba. She passed on a frew years ago and her legacy lives on. Ku nca!
Great post– the Golden Afriques are awesome, and three has some amazing stuff. I’d never heard the Mahotella Queens before and their track is incredible. So is that song Ba Kuluna. Thanks for another great selection.
Next time someone asks how you’re doing answer back, “I’m dolly.”
Yeah like fifty years ago… jus’ kidding, really cool site. You would say Or-right! these days, or Sharp! if you were feeling the gangstar flow…
Glad to know these have your endorsement – I gave one to my sister for Christmas

Wow. I’d never heard this music before. The track by Dolly Rathebe is phenomenal! Any chance of hearing more of her works? Based on this one track, it’s right up there with American jazz/r&b artists like Lavern Baker and Nina Simone. Or I don’t know? Maybe other recommendations for this type of early jazzy-blues African music?
Ah, these are wonderful. (And I was an early adopter! Has it really been that long?)
