So, even the Ghanaian "original" must have had a Yoruba prototype (the traffic went both ways: Nigerians were crazy for new versions of Ghanaian folksong "Yaa Amponsah"). I think I know what the Nigerian prototype was, but I don't have my computer here, so I can't confirm. I'll let you know in a few weeks. When I was in Paris in June '06, I noticed a lot of panhandlers around the Poste by the Canal St-Martin, probably because there is a cash machine right there on the wall. On previous trips to Paris in the '80s and '90s, I rarely saw any street people, and assumed it was because of the French social security programs, so I was dismayed and surprised to notice them on my last visit.
