Not exactly Christmas music
Don’t get me wrong – I love Christmas, especially the bit where I get to blast Domenic The Italian Christmas Donkey in my car with the windows down.
But I need a break after the overdrive of carols… so I was digging through my collection this afternoon and decided to put together a little gift: my favourite African hiphop tunes, at least for this warm Christmas Eve afternoon.
It’s a good opportunity for new Benn loxo listeners to do some catch-up and hear tracks that were posted before they found this site. For the rest of us it’s a little collection of beats I hope you all enjoy.. plus a Madvillain bonus track that’s too good to leave off. Merry Christmas.
If you want to suggest any of your African hiphop favourites that didn’t make this quick mix leave a comment or send me an e-mail.
Bole 2 Harlem – Hoya Hoye
Emmanuel Jal & Abdel Gadir Salim – Elengwen
Gokh-Bi System – Xaesal
X-Plastaz – Msimu kwa msimu
Mode9 – Track 1
Daara J – Boomerang
Positive Black Soul – Boul Ma Mine
Outshine – Caution
Batman Samini – Lambori
Positive Black Soul – Redemption
Awadi – Le cri ou peuple
Xuman et Bugz Bunny – Sassouné
Abass – Abass
Viviane & Fou Malade – Taximan
Omzo – Missalu Aduna
Slam Revolution Feat BMG 44
Posse & Doudou – Africa Lakalé
Boul N’Baï – SIDA
Slam Revolution – Wax Degg
Mode9 – Track 4
Madvillain – Figaro (101 Remix)

I really liked X-Plastaz, Mode9, Outshine, Omzo, Slam Revolution and Xuman et Bugz Bunny. But Xuman et Bugz Bunny’s “Sassouné” wouldnt download for me. It streamed fine and the others d/led fine, but this one wouldnt.

I really liked the tracks that I heard, but I couldn’t download OR stream Bugz Bunny, Posse N Doudou or Boul N’Baye.
Great stuff!
Thanks for the heads up – the links have been fixed.

Happy New Year. Thanks for being a straight source over the years.
excellent mix – first track is awesome -bole 2 harlem
thanks for all your efforts in doing this site
Great tunes– Boul Ma Mine sounds almost like reggaeton. I read somewhere that someone in Cote d’Ivoire did a hip hop cover of Ernesto Djedje’s Zibote. Have you ever heard that? I can’t find it anywhere, would love to hear it…
Thanx for that Christmas present
Just in time for Tabaski

They Lion, haven’t heard that Zibote remix.. but a friend is coming back from Abidjan soon so I’ll see if he can grab it.
Happy new year,
Matt

[...] I knew I could count on Benn loxo du taccu, my favorite music blog, to provide an antidote for the holiday music that nearly drove me nuts last month. On Christmas Eve, Benn loxo posted a great selection of African hip hop. I have a hard time with hip hop that’s not in English or Spanish, but some of this stuff is awesome. The tracks by Outshine, Bole 2 Harlem, and Mode 9 are definitely my favorites, but it’s all worth a listen. Anything to get that damn “Little Drummer Boy” out of my head… [...]
excellent !!! ça mérite largement un cd ! je ne connaissais pas cette reprise de “Boul Ma Mine” par le PBS , ça figure sur quel album ?
all of the songs are great. thanks for sharing!
dear Matt , would you be kind to tell me on which cd is this new version of “Boul Ma Mine” by Positive Black Soul ? or maybe it’s only on a tape ?
thanks. Where can I learn more on Bole 2 Harlem ?
Garrincha,
Check-out their web site: http://www.bole2harlem.com/
the instrumental on the madvillain – sounds nubian/southern-egyptian or sudanese, maybe eritrean? any idea? would love to see/hear more sounds from the area if you have any. i had a bunch of tapes from aswan, abu simbel and villages around lake nasser but lost them all in a move, and i really miss that sound.
[...] on today’s show, we featured an african hip hop mix by ghislain poirier – originally broadcast on the masala radio show in montreal, rebroadcast by permission from da ghis. dj/rupture is hosting a download of the mix at negrophonic and also directs to an excellent complimentary selection of african hip hop at bennloxo.com. well I can’t download any of these songs but thx anyways^^
can someone please please please put this collection up on Mediafire or something??? i beg you…
we is DYING out here!!!!
Very interesting, cool
I’ve been listening to that Outshine song for over a year now and love it. Where can I find more of Caution?
This is by far the most fun and interesting Christmas CD to come along in quite awhile. The only instruments used were Casio keyboards and handheld games (along with a couple of other Casio instruments)
It is an eclectic mix of 80’s, electronic, sci-fi, and nostalgia which is creating quite a buzz this year. I thought that a few might appreciate something a little different for the Holidays
Cheers
This is one of the coolest modern takes on Christmas music that I have ever heard!!!! Kasio Kristmas does a very unique interpretation of holiday classics. I will definitely be grooving to this while I drink eggnog during the holiday season. Very cool! Do yourself a favor and check it out.
