Not exactly Christmas music

Matt Yanchyshyn @ 5:19 pm

Santa PlaneDon’t get me wrong - I love Christmas, especially the bit where I get to blast Domenic The Italian Christmas Donkey in my car with the windows down.

But I need a break after the overdrive of carols… so I was digging through my collection this afternoon and decided to put together a little gift: my favourite African hiphop tunes, at least for this warm Christmas Eve afternoon.

It’s a good opportunity for new Benn loxo listeners to do some catch-up and hear tracks that were posted before they found this site. For the rest of us it’s a little collection of beats I hope you all enjoy.. plus a Madvillain bonus track that’s too good to leave off. Merry Christmas.

If you want to suggest any of your African hiphop favourites that didn’t make this quick mix leave a comment or send me an e-mail.

Bole 2 Harlem - Hoya Hoye

Gokh-Bi System - Xaesal

Great tunes– Boul Ma Mine sounds almost like reggaeton. I read somewhere that someone in Cote d’Ivoire did a hip hop cover of Ernesto Djedje’s Zibote. Have you ever heard that? I can’t find it anywhere, would love to hear it…

[...] I knew I could count on Benn loxo du taccu, my favorite music blog, to provide an antidote for the holiday music that nearly drove me nuts last month. On Christmas Eve, Benn loxo posted a great selection of African hip hop. I have a hard time with hip hop that’s not in English or Spanish, but some of this stuff is awesome. The tracks by Outshine, Bole 2 Harlem, and Mode 9 are definitely my favorites, but it’s all worth a listen. Anything to get that damn “Little Drummer Boy” out of my head… [...]

the instrumental on the madvillain - sounds nubian/southern-egyptian or sudanese, maybe eritrean? any idea? would love to see/hear more sounds from the area if you have any. i had a bunch of tapes from aswan, abu simbel and villages around lake nasser but lost them all in a move, and i really miss that sound.
