Bend those keys

Matt Yanchyshyn @ 11:59

Ghana Soundz 2I like Ghana Soundz Vol. 2 even better than the first. It bursts with funk.

Today’s selection off this compilation is by Ebo Taylor Jr. & Wuta Wazuri. Ebo Taylor Jr., son of the relatively well-known Ghanaian guitarist Ebo Taylor, was a pretty solid musician in his own right. The keyboards on this track are pretty funky, even though at moments they sound a touch like some tripped-out segment from an ELP track. Wuta Wazuri back Ebo’s keys up with some of their 70s Ghana pop-funk.

The liner notes to Ghana Soundz 2 say that this track is “an end-of-the-night wobbler for sure.” Exactly.

  1. Hi there.

I like that number. It’s a lot different from what I’ve been hearing, when I was at Ivory Coast at Christmas ’99. That was something of a experience. The military got the power when I was there. People shooting in the air, buring buildings… and a lot happy people.

I’ve not been there since. I got a divorse from my African vife. I still listning to African music. Often I’m listning to Pan Afrikan Allstars. And shop on the net, there sell music from Africa. They do have a Internet Radio too…

Press my link and listen. Enjoy…

  2. This isn’t related to your post, but I just wanted to say that I love your blog. You have really opened me up to a whole continent of music that was sadly absent from my collection (apart from Kandia Kouyate).

  3. Muito bom !!! i don’t write english very well but this song is great.

  4. I bought both of the Ghana Soundz albums, and now I want to hear more from K.Frimpong. He’s got such an interesting sound! Some of the other songs remind me of acid-jazz, but with great, funky “afrobeat” grooves. I’ve got a few Fela Kuti albums, but the Ghanaian sound is more fun and danceable. Thanks for the recommendation.

  6. [...] Following the success of their two Ghana Soundz releases, Soundway released an amazing best-of compilation of one West Africa’s least known “golden era” bands, T.P. Orchestre Poly-Rythmo de Cotonou. As usual, they did a great job cleaning up the vinyl and bringing the tunes back to life without over-reproducing. We can thank Soundway’s Miles Cleret for the great crate-digging. [...]
