King of Fuji
Today’s post is going to be a little strange for two reasons:
- I’ve managed to throw my back out and have been confined to my bed with codeine, paracetamol, a muscle relaxant and Nurse K.
- I’ve had a few requests for some music that you’d really have a hard time buying or even hearing outside of Nigeria and/or West Africa.
Fuji has been around since the 1970s. It’s mainly a Lagos thing and its artists and fans are primarily Yoruba, one of the largest ethnicities in Nigeria. Its high-speed percussion and vocals have their roots in Islamic Ajisari music, although modern fuji sounds nothing like it. Among Yoruba youth in the Lagos area, fuji is the most popular form of music, arguably eclipsing even hip-hop.
Fuji is basically Nigeria’s equivalent to drum n bass. I read one guy refer to it as “afro-hardcore”. It’s a super high-speed genre of contemporary Nigerian music that is almost impossible to dance to unless you know what you’re doing or have done a lot of something.
I’m not sure if I like fuji too much, but it’s definitely unique. Much like Senegal’s mbalax, fuji is purely local and very popular. Cultures outside of Yoruba Lagosians would have a tough time finding their way around the music. Let me know if you’re into it. And seriously, even if you hate the stuff, if you’re ever in Lagos and get the chance to go to a hot fuji club you shouldn’t miss it.
Today’s picks are by the “King of Fuji”, Abass Obesere. He’s the in-thing among the young fuji afficionados on the Lagos mainland.

I love Abass. He is wonderfully gifted. He wraps wise words in what many call lewd songs. His songs are not for feeble minds. He is deep and he understands language and proverbs. He is a rare composer.
On a personal note, he is well-cultured, easy-going, unassuming, friendly and generous. He has lifted many musicians and many other lass-privileged people. He is my man!

In any part of the world leaders are elected or selected or made.
The founder of Fuji is Alh. Barrister while Alh. Kolington is a co-founder, Alh. Wasiu once called himself King of Fuji even when the founders are alive, yet nobody complain about this.
If we look at Fuji as a music, lot has made impact but some has contributed greatly to the development of the industry: peole like Wasiu, Ayuba, Osupa, Shina Akanni, Obesere,…just to mention few of them, but some lack confidence. Anyway the best of all are Ayuba, Osupa and Obesere due to their innovation.
Osupa seems to have done great research about Fuji music and his music look to be the best.
If Osupa is made King of Music, Wasiu Kin of Fuji and Obesere Paramount King of Music, them Obesere is the head while Osupa is next to him and Alh. Ayinde Wasiu is the next to Osupa. Looking cretically and taking opinion of people around the world, the arrangement is acceptable that way.
Wasiu should learn to accept how thing go because fuji has gone beyong talking on state.
Osupa should be encourage because he is creative and focus while Obesere is a motivator, Ayuba is a king who nobody argue.

If PDP is for big and famous people in Nigeria, it does’nt mean the common people should be forced to join PDP. If K1 sings only for big and famous men as you have quoted, there must be a good Musician like King Osupa that will carry all Nigerians along.
